CAD/CAM dentistry is a field of dentistry and prosthodontics using CAD/CAM(computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) to improve the design and creation of dental restorations, especially dental prostheses, including crowns, crown lays, veneers, inlays and onlays, fixed bridges, dental implant ... CEREC is actually an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Single Visit Dentistry is a recent technologically enabled phenomenon in dentistry that allows crowns, veneers, inlays and onlays, bridges, and implant restorations to be fabricated within the duration of a single dental appointment. CEREC (Chair-side Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a method of CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) dentistry  CEREC uses CAD/CAM technology which incorporates a camera, computer, and milling machine into one instrument.
The instrument uses a specialty camera that takes a precise 3-D picture of the tooth or space to be restored. The optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen where the accredited dentist or trained staff virtually design the restoration. Then, the CAM takes over and automatically creates the restoration. The last step is when the newly created restoration is bonded to the surface of the old tooth. This entire process is completed in a single dental appointment.

CAD/CAM Dentistry

CAD/CAM technology allows the delivery of a well-fitting, aesthetic and a durable prostheses for the patient. Chairside CAD/CAM restoration differs from conventional dentistry in that the prosthesis is typically luted or bonded the same day. Conventional prosthesis, such as crowns, have temporaries placed from one to several weeks while a dental laboratory or in house dental lab produces the restoration. The patient returns later to have the temporaries removed and the laboratory-made crown cemented or bonded in place. An in-house CAD/CAM system enables the dentist to create a finished inlay in as little as an hour in some cases.
CADCAM systems use an optical camera to take a virtual impression by creating a 3D image which is forwarded to a software program and the impression results in a computer-generated cast on which the restoration is designed. Bonded veneer CAD/CAM restorations are more conservative in their preparation of the tooth. As bonding is more effective on tooth enamel than the underlying dentin, care is taken not to remove the enamel layer. All CAD/CAM systems contain a digital scanner that makes models readable by computers software that can be used to process and produce data for the prosthesis technology that changes the data into a product. The system can be used chair-side, in the lab or in a production centre. Typically CAD/CAM dental restorations are milled from solid blocks of ceramic or composite resin that closely match the basic shade of the restored tooth.
After decayed or broken areas of the tooth are corrected by the dentist, an image (scan) is taken of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth. This image, called a digital impression, draws the data into a computer. Proprietary software then creates a replacement part for the missing areas of the tooth, creating a virtual restoration. This is called reverse engineering. The software sends this virtual data to a milling machine where the replacement part is carved out of a solid block of ceramic or composite resin. Stains and glazes are fired to the surfaces of the milled ceramic crown or bridge to correct the otherwise monochromatic appearance of the restoration. The restoration is then adjusted in the patient’s mouth and cemented or bonded in place.

Chairside cadcam A powder free camera solution for all dental impressions. No messy impressions. Intraoral scan in seconds. The CEREC Omnicam allows to take a coating-free intraoral scan of the natural tooth substance and gingiva. This saves an extra work step, reduces the learning curve and makes impression-taking more pleasant and time-saving than ever before. The precise 3D model allows yto clearly differentiate between the preparation margin and the gingiva. This enables the exact definition of the preparation margin during the subsequent designing process in the CEREC software. The feature "Guided scanning" helps to create a digital impression of the entire jaw quickly and precisely with the CEREC Omnicam. The software is designed so that it is easy to learn: This simple handling means that impressions can be easily made. Digital data allows rapid export to external service providers for aligners or complex laboratory indications.
